I keep 7 mid sized Mbuna in my 55 with much success so far...there VERY colorful fish and come is a wide variety of paterns and colors. Setup for most cichlids is lots of rocks and hiding places to establish territories and offer hiding places. Ive also managed to do quite well with live plants(anarchis, Java moss, java fern, pothos) in my tank despite them being mostly herbivorous. Ive kept a few other types of cichlids(convicts, firemouths) and these have been by far my favorite...there very entertaining to watch how they interact with different fish and things in the tank. Make sure your filtration is up to par as with most fish, they need clean water to thrive in.
