My blockhead has laid what seems to be eggs, they are huge compared to the eggs I saw in my blue acara tank, about 2-2.5 times the size

Heres a picture...

The only thing is that this "girl" (assumed) is the only one left in the tank, the cory and bristlenose have been eaten or have died and then been eaten. I've just come back from a long holiday were they have only been fed not changed or checked.

Any comments?

Sorry but I didn't see the question here. Yes, single females of almost all cichlids can and often do lay eggs! If you are asking why so large? It works this way: any fish who lays 100's or sometimes 1000's of eggs, have very tiny eggs. The more eggs a species lays = the smaller the eggs. Some fish produce only 3 to 4 eggs each time and they are huge. Your spawns looks to be under 50 as compared to probably the 100's the Blue Acara laid. So it figures: small eggs = more eggs; larger eggs = less eggs. WHY? Those who produce a large number of eggs in the wild usually lose most of them to other fish. Those which produce lots less usually have most of them survive. Also, the larger the eggs, the larger the fry will be when free swimming. They can last a few days until fungus gets to them.

Sorry I can't help you with your answer, but do you have a picture of her? I think they are interesting fish and would love to see yours.:)

My other question would be...why did she lay eggs if shes the only one in the tank? Could it be because of the mirror/s
The background of my tank is a mirror. Also the black rectangle next to the rock in the 1st picture is also a mirror.
