I'm getting ready to replace the Compact Fluorescent bulbs in my custom sealife fixture and need some advice. the setup is a 125 gal aquarium which is heavily planted and the lighting is 4 x 96w. I'm looking at either the 6700k or the 8800k spectrum bulbs. I have been told to use the 6700k for the plants since it is closer to red on the light spectrum. However, I am also concerned about what "looks" better for viewing fish and plants the 6700k/8800k. I of the understanding that the 6700k is more of a yellow looking light in the tank and the 8800k is more of a white? Any opinions or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

i would go with the 6700k. some ppl say lower the kelvin, yellower it looks. this is true to a certain extend. BUT, i used 6700K and its pure white. my 5500k bulb is also pure white. i had a 4100k once that wasnt as white. also i like 6700 for viewing because it makes the tank look crystal clear with its intense white color.

Thanks Chinaboy for the input. The more I've read and talked with people the 6700k sounds like the way to go.

You could also split it, and use a mix of lights. This is done frequently in SW reefs--one bulb meets the spectrum needs for photosynthesis, and the other contributes, but it primarily to appeal to the viewing eye.

I'm now using the 8800K bulbs and they look real nice! There's not a whole lot of difference in them and the 6700K's I was using.
