My 12 gallon community tank has 1.25 wpg so my plant selection is limited, and although the plants survive, they do not flourish. I do not want to retrofit b/c 1) it is expensive 2) I am not experienced with DIY electrical work and 3) it would void my warranty.

I would like to make my 5.5 bright enough for a variety of plants though. Here is the hood I am considering:

Would a CF bulb work in this hood?

Okay, I found 2 5.5 gallon hoods that I like a lot.

1) Incandescent 15w $28
2) Flourescent 14w $42

I bought the incandescent and went in search of a CF for it. I found a 14w from Home Depot that fits, but only after installing it did I realize it is the "warm white light" variety. Now that I think of it, this was the only variety that my Home Depot sells. Should I take everything back and shell out the extra $14 for the fluorescent? If I do, should I buy a new 'plant' bulb for it?

This is what I use on my 5G, and it's enough to grow glosso carpets.

IMO, 5WPG is perfect for a 5G as long as you add a little CO2.
