I have a few wild Peruvian "Altums" in a 30 gallon tank, and two hang around together most of the time, and keep the other two fish in the upper extreme sides of the tank. Not terribly aggressively so, but it's definitely noticeable. These same two fish swim together. I do see them display a tiny bit of aggression between them once in a while.

Do you think they could be pairing up?

That sounds like typical cichlid pairing behavior to me, I'll second Danger's assesment about the tank size as well, a 30gal is only really suitable for a pair (especially if they are a pair). There will also always be a bit of aggression between the two of them, just call them little squabbles. Its just something that they do, but if they are together most of the time, most likely they are pairing up.

Actually the 30 gallon tank is for quarantine purposes. My plan was to put about 6 true Altums in my 90 gallon planted tank so I'm probably going to leave them in the quarantine tank until I get the shipment of true Altums. I'm not sure what I'm going to do with them. A local friend might take them, as I only want true Altums in the planted tank. They are beautiful fish, however.
