I would like to clean the driftwood in my 20g. Had a little accident with food and it messed up the water and made it smell pretty bad. I'm doing daily water changes to clean it up properly but when I took the wood out it was smelling pretty bad. I would like to soak it in something to get rid of the smell and clean it up as it has small hair growing on it. Not sure it it's algae or something else.

Thanks.

I'd just scrub it really well. Some woods get soft on the outside, and scrubbing will take this layer off. I have a plastic nylon brush that's used for nothing but my tanks. Remove the wodd from teh tank--otherwise, it could clog your filter.

If you share your home with anyone, they may look at you funny, but...

Try boiling it.

Put it in the biggest pot you have, bring it to a rolling boil, cover and simmer for 30 minutes...

Oops, sorry, it's getting close to my supper time ;)

Seriously though, it'll slay everything on/in the wood. That part of your bio-filter will have to start-over, but it sounds like you're managing that problem with huge/frequent water changes right now anyway.

Edited for grammar, punctuation, and clarity.

I also boil mine, if there is anything "growing" on it. Before I do, I also clean it really good, using a stiff nylon brush and sometime a knife to scrape it gently. Kinda messy in the kitchen sink!!!! Best to take it outside.
