Hello and welcome to the 20,000th thread in the history the forum!
Anyway, anyone have any experience with aquariums at university? About what sizes are reasonable? What fish did you keep?

As I recall there are several dormites around here. I live in a small single and currently have 7 tanks running (although two more are about to be set up as grow-out tanks), a 29g, a 12g, a 5g, a 3g, and 3 6g tanks.
The rules here state that students may have aquariums of up to 29 gallons with 10 gallons *of water* and that we may keep fish and amphibians. (Guess my shrimp and snails are breaking the rules). Okay soo my 29 gallon is completely full, but it does have a very large 20 inch long bulky peice of driftwood and around 40 pounds of substrate, and there's all those fish and plants displacing the water....

Lucky you, breaking the 20k barrier.
Anyway, I, too am a college student (freshman or sophomore depending whether you count AP credits). Anyway, I started with a double betta hex. Then came the MiniBow 2.5 gallon (currently in my sister's possession). During x-mas break I received an Eclipse System 12, which everyone here thinks is pretty nifty. Then, I went from having a cute hobby to being full-fledged psychotic when I bought a standard 5.5 gallon for my desktop (and because the lighting on the Eclipse is too low for most plants) with leftover x-mas money.
I'm not sure if my university has rules about such things. If they do, no one I know has ever heard of them. I've heard of a few kids with hamsters. I'm sure they draw the line at birds though.
Best of all, my roommate likes the fish. He thinks I go overboard sometimes, but he's cool with it.

Considering the fact that it's MY desk to use as I want, I can't imagine why 125g would be excessive... It's not like the floors will collapse (oops...) and if someone is allergic to my fish, don't eat them! And don't inhale them either. Besides I won't have to pay the electric bill!
