I have a large stump type piece of driftwood (came with a used aquarium). It's had been sitting outside and was extremely dirty. No amount of scrubbing was going to remove the 'crap' on this wood. So I decided that I would bleach, then boil, then dechlor the wood, then let it soak until I was ready to use it.
Well after the bleaching in hot water I noticed that the wood has a turpentine smell to it. I'm not sure if it's a reaction from the bleach? Or if this wood is just not safe to use period? Unless the wood is pine? Any idea's? I haven't bothered to boil it yet since the turpentine smell took me off guard. I was actually going to throw it out. But I might try boiling it just to see if it gets rid of the odor.
The people I got this wood from apparently used it in their tank until they took the tank down.
Here's a pic of the driftwood.. I got two pieces. I haven't tried cleaning the larger one since I don't have anything big enough to soak it in.
