If the tips get to be too tall, can I cut them off and plant them (with the intention of starting a new plant)?

Also, do snails like java moss? I would like to keep a few apple snails in my new soon-to-be planted tank, but I don't want to sacrifice my $5 java moss (which is still quite small and not growing much). If I fed them slices of cucumber, would they prefer that to my plants?

The answer to your first question is yes.
I have a personal aversion to snails so I'm not the person to ask about them. I have heard that Apple Snails do eat plants however.

snails (and most living things) seem to have an aversion to eating java moss. so you're okay with that. apple snails vary a lot by species...the typical smallish species most often seen in large chain stores don't seem to eat my plants, but i bought one from an lfs here in gainesville that attempted to terminate all plant life in one of my tanks. this was a giant-sized one, so my advice is stick with smallish ones, and dare i say it, buy a couple at petsmart.
