Hi

ive had my cichlid for many years now, he isnt acting strange but there is a red slightly transparent protusion from his gills, it looks sort of like am worm but im not sure where it would have come from.
I havent introduced new fish since janurary and they were 2 bristlenoses.
I havent added any plants either.
ive got a photo but its sort of blurry cause he wont stay still, does anyone know what it is??
the best description i can give it is it looks like an earthworm half sticking out of his gills. It goes in and out with his breathing so its either attached or maybe part of his gills??

Oh man, that's nasty. The only things I could think it could be would either be a parasite, or a part of hist gill that is deformed or swollen.
I would QT him, and try a salt treatment.
I would also pm Mel_20_20 and Rbishop with a link to this thread. The both know WAY more about this stuff than I do.

Sorry. I cant tell for sure from one pic. Is it possible to post more pics taken from diff angles?

Yeah, more pics would be great. You can even net him to get closer shots.

here are some more pictures, im pretty sure now it isnt a worm and its just mucus, i netted him and pulled very gently at the protusion with tweezers the protusion didnt move (as a living organism would if tugged on) and then a little bit came off which was rather globular and cohesive in nature much like mucus.

I think ill just wait and see what happens, hopefully it will clear up on its own accord if not, i'll probably posting again.

He may have just gotten something in his gill, and the gill reacted that way. Just keep the water extra clean, use some StressCoat if you have it, and I'm sure he'll be fine.

yeah thats what i was thinking, i just changed the water in the tank and found some more mucus floating about....i think it was the algae pellets making the water cloudy and probably irritating his gills

Hmm. I would clean your gravel really well, and maybe decrease your feeding if you think it is caused by food.
