I have a new 29 gallon aquarium that I purchased a week and a half ago. I have a male betta in there. The tank is bigger than I would think that the betta is used to. Is the 29 gallon tank too deep for the betta? I noticed that he likes to rest on the edge of the suction cup that holds my thermometer on which is quite close to the surface. Do I need something for him to rest on that is closer to the surface? Is the bottom of the tank to deep for him to rest comfortably?
Also, is it not a good idea to even have him in there while the tank is still cycling?

i have a 29 with 2 bettas (theres more an enough space for em to set up territories) and both bettas doesnt seem to have a preferance in depth although he does stay on his side only tho

one is a short tail the other long tail

I have my betta in a 55G. He just swims all over the place from the left to right all day long. Usually at the top of the tank but does venture down to the bottom on several occassions.

Bettas do like a bit of a rest. A 29 gallon is tall so it will be hard to get some plants that are sturdy and really tall. So if he is happy resting on the thermometer then that is great. I would try to make sure that the thermomter is on the opposite side from the filter or as far away as possible. While current isn't a really big issue when they are swimming, they do like to rest in a spot outside of the current.

bettas also breathe from the surface so he may just be lazy and doesn't want to go all the way from the bottom to the top for air. Maybe you can find a decoration that is tall and he will lay on that instead. I had mine in my 55 gallon for a while (until he massacred my guppies and bullied my mollies) and he would lay near the bottom and come up for air when he wanted. I would just let him do what he likes. Kyle

No. a 29 is not too deep for him. I had one in my 55 that seemed to prfer the bottom. He only went up for air and then back to the bottom again. Also had one that liked to hang out near the top. As for the cycling, I wouldn't want ANY fish in there.
