I believe it can. I find often heaters with low ratings can still handle tanks easily. I had a 75 watt heater on a 35 gallon without a problem.

Is there a big difference between the room temp. and temp. you want to keep the tank?
If your room temp. is consistently in the 70s and your want the tank temp in the 70s, then you probably won't have a problem. If the difference in temps is larger then you may want to scale up.

It is generally recommended to get 3-5 watts per gallon. But I agree with what was mentioned. The closer the room temp is to the desired tank temp, the less work the heater will have to do and should be fine.
One of my tanks is near a drafty window so the heater is on quite a bit. The other is in the living room and I almost never see it turned on.

I think i might have to upgrade. I have never noticed the light off and the heater has been in the tank for a 1/2 week. It is a more exspensive heater but i worry cause my cheap meijers heat broke after staying on long and killed all the fish in my tank. Is it bad for the heate to stay on that long.
