ok, firstly, i raised my tank temp to 290 degrees celcius or 82 degrees farenheit to help cure a case of ich, now its over, i am slowly bring the tank temp back down to around 24-6 degrees celcius, however, the thermometer i leave bobbing around in my tank says the tank is still 29 degrees celcius, and the thermostat in my heater is set for 26 degrees, the heater still turns itself on?!?!?!?!
either the thermometer isnt telling the truth or the heater isnt???
do you have this problems??
which one should i beleive, and also, how can i manually bring the temp down? i tried floating a bag of ice in the tank and that only brought htem temp down about 1/2 a degree??
any ideas?
thank dudes

i got a therm that stuck on 32c with a faulty heater.....
tried boiling it\freezing it to unstick it, didnt work.

for the cost, buy another, least you wont deep-fry the tank.
:)

Try a third measurement (another thermometer) and see what it says. If it's a reliable instrument, use it to figure how far off the others are. If it isn't, and the two thermometers are close, average them and try to remember which is high and low by how much.

Ho-Ho-Ho!:D

After a near disaster, I now keep 2 thermometers in my tanks at all times.
Very good idea! I have the digital readout that has High and Low temp alarms. Figured I'd only buy it once... I also have a digital (cooking type) from Wal-Mart that I highly recommend. It's inexpensive and works very quick. It runs off a watch type battery.
I have the 'tape on' type of thermometer too. I got that one before the digital. I have found that shining a flashlight on it helps the temperature to show up much better than just light in the room...
{..just a reminder - keep your water temps the same when doing water changes!....} :)

I think everyone missed the point on this one. somthin_Fishy40 said that the thermometer reads 29 but the thermostat reads 26. The problem here is that the thermostat is not really a thermometer and as a previous poster in another thread posted these are calibrated to keep the SET temperature based on an ambient room temperature of 73 or so. I would believe what the thermometer says. I find those set dials on the top of heaters to be terribly inacurate. As was said, get a second thermometer and compare the two. Do not count on what the heater set dial says.
