Hello Everyone,
I HAVE A 55 GAL AQ. FISH ONLY. ITS ONLY BEEN UP ABOUT 3 MONTHS. I HAVE A FEW DAMSELS AND A CLOWN. I HAVE AN UNDER GRAVEL FILTER W/PWR HEADS, AND A HANG ON FILTER ON THE BACK. MY SUBSTRATE IS COARSE CRUSHSED CORAL(1 1/2 INCH ON THE FLOOR) MY NUMBERS ALL LOOK GOOD. AMMONIA 0
NITRITE 0 NITRATE 20-40 EVERTHING ELSE W/IN NORM. I HAD A FEW WHITE SPOTS ON THE CLOWN AND WAS TOLD TO USE MALICHITE GREEN. NOW, EVERTHINGS BREATHING FAST , LOST A SNAIL(BUT HE WAS HIDING A SMALL CRAB 1/2 INCH OR SO, KINDA PINK).I LOST FISH BEFORE AND WOULD HATE TO DO IT AGAIN. TRYING TO GET ESTABLISHED, SO I CAN GET SOME REAL FISH.

Welcome to Aquaria Central. First thing to do is stop posting in all caps. It wears on the eyes :). You are using some really old methods of fish keeping which is probably causing some problems. Undergravels have long been considered inefficient and could be causing problems, same with the large crushed coral. Do you have any live rock in the tank? If not then this is a huge problem. If not then you won't be able to keep toughies till you get around 50lbs at a minimum in there. This could definitely be stressing the fish. First thing to do is never treat your main tank with any kind of medication. It kills inverts as you found out. So I would do a 50 percent water change and put carbon in there to suck up the meds. Then let everything balance itself out again. Then remove the Damsels and you should be okay to add some of the tougher fish. Anyway, hope this helps and good luck.

most definately old skool techniques.
sounds like a possible case of sudden death syndrome

get rid of the crushed coral and the underground filter - pronto

then, buy some sand - try to avoid silica if possible, go for aragonite. silica's okay but tends to cause diatom blooms.

then invest in a good protein skimmer - aqua c remora or cpr bak bak would probably do fine.

then get some good live rock, i recommend tampabaysaltwater.com for atlantic live rock or liveaquaria.com for pacific live rock.

take out the carbon filter, or any other filter that you may have in the H.O.T. filter. run it without anything in it for water circulation.

if the powerheads are RIOS, GET RID OF THEM - QUICK!
and replace them with something good - like some Maxi Jets.

what kind of filter and powerheads are you running right now?

P.S. i strongly recommend buying:

The Conscientious Marine Aquarist: A Commonsense Handbook for Successful Saltwater Hobbyists
by: Robert Fenner

that book is probably one of the best, if not the best, overall guide to MODERN fishkeeping. sorry if i sound like im flaming you, i don't mean to be mean. hope this info. helps.
