Is adding Salt okay in a planted tank? How much?

MY SPECS:

I have a 20 gallon long, with an Eheim Pro II filtration, and a small CO2 exchanger inside the tank. I have some Zebra Danio's, Cardinal Tetras, and some Silver Mollies, along with an assortment of 5 different types of plants, placed in a mix of Flourite, and Eco-Complete substrate.

My question is, is it okay to add salt to this tank, and if so, how much? My freind has a bag of "Instant Ocean" salt he uses for his saltwater tank... would that be better to use, or just use the plain freshwater salt without all the "micro elements" the Instant Ocean salt has?

Well, I've actually read on many sites that adding salt to freshwater aquariums aids in the overall health in fish, including to help prevent common diseases such as Ick. The amount varies, anywhere from 1 tablespoon for every 5, 10, or 15 gallons.

So I was just curiouse if this would harm the planted aquarium.

Salt is used as a treatment, for a limited time span. Anyone advocatiing salt as a chronic addition to FW tanks understands little or nothing about the biochemistry of FW fish (or plants).

But it is an old and popular myth which will not die.

Thanks for the replies. I think I'll hold off on the salt. I see it may have some slight benifit with the fish, but not enough to always use, and even put my life plants in jeopardy.
