Hello all:
I've decided to have holes drilled on the bottom of my 45gal glass tank, so I can use a sump/refugium without need for overflow. It will be done on Sunday. Any quick thoughts as to the optimum size for the drain hole and return? Any replies appreciated.

Unless your also building internal overflow boxes, Id install the holes in the back glass as high up as possible.

1" drain and 3/4" return is pretty standard.

A 1" bulkhead needs a 1 3/4" hole, and a 3/4" bulkhead needs a 1 1/2" hole.

Just for added education. A 1'' plastic bulkhead will have an inside diameter of about 1.25 inches. A 3/4 bulkhead will have an inside diameter of about 1 inch. I don't know the reason why pipes are sized like that but that is just the way it is.

Well:

I got lucky. No glass breakage and the 2 holes were drilled in about 10 minutes total time. The LFS installed 1 1/2" bulkhead on the drain and 1" bulkhead on the return. Now, I have to figure out all the plumbing issues!

Where did they drill the holes.

And you should be using the 1" as a drain to the sump, and the 1/2" as the return. Wont work the other way.

What process did you use to drill the holes...and where did you put them, on the top of the tank or down int the corners?
