Opinion: not necessary. If you have healthy livestock, and good husbandry (including quarantine), pathogens shouldn't be a problem. SOme will say that you kill off more good stuff than bad with a UV unit.
I have used it to deal with cryptocaryon years ago, but now the unit just sits in the basement.
