i have a balloon molly who has what looks like blood streaks around the mouth area. she is eating & behaving perfectly normal. what could be the problem?

Any chance of taking a pic and posting it? I've seen a lot of stuff but that one sounds new to me. I'll do some checking. Are you adding any salt to your water? What are the water parameters?

Okay, it appears it is the beginning stages of cottonmouth disease. I wish I would have heard of this earlier, because it sounds like what my arowana just had. He got over it with no meds, but poor water quality seems to have alot to do with it. Rough handling also will do it, which is what happened to him, not by me but himself. Hard to catch a 2 foot fish. :p Anyways, check your parameters and make sure you are doing your water changes properly. You can get some Maracyn medicine by Mardel Labs at just about any store and it will help. Follow the instructions exactly, any deviation could cause a setback. Make sure to remove any carbon during this time. Your molly actually has red streak disease and will eventually turn to cottonmouth disease if not treated. Anyone, if I'm not right, please correct me here, just going but what I looked up.
