What is filter floss?

I have seen several references to filter floss. I have searched the forum but I can't figure out exactly what it is. Is it regular floss that you just pack into a filter or is it a special filter material bought from a LFS?

The reason I'm interested is that my water is slightly cloudy. Looking from the front it is not really noticable, but from the side it is obviously cloudy. I have a 29g with an AquaClear 300. I have cut back on what I've been feeding, but I was not feeding them much to start with, since I read so much about overfeeding.

It seems from what I've read that maybe I need finer filtration than the standard foam in the AC300.

I had also read some about the HOT Magnum from Marineland. I was wondering if running this with the Micron filter for a few hours might clear it up.

Filter floss is simply polyester batting. The stuff you make pillows out of. They sell it in the fish store in small bags or else you can pick it up at places like walmart in the fabric section for cheaper. A little bit will do ya. Just rinse when you do a water change.

depending on how dirty it gets, you may need to replace it every time on water changes. And, depending on you filter(s), your bioballs and sponges will hold the good bacteria, so you can replace the filter floss on every water change.

sorry sledge I dont want to steal your post, but they answered u that u have to wash or change the flos , with every water change, I do a weakly water change, and I only washed my floss/foam twice in six months. with it I have active carbon, phosex, and ceramics.Should I wash chnage the filter media more often?

lostris, your ceramics and foam is all that is necessary for a decent beneficial bioload. You don't need to constantly have carbon in there. Change out the floss, as it IS filter material. You need to remove the gunk to have filtration. Keep the filter (floss) clean... Replace it when it's dirty..

I don't know what others do, but when I take out my media to rinse it (weekly), I syphon out the container as best I can to get rid of the bits floating there. Maybe about twice a year I actually take the whole thing off and scrub the chamber and tubes and clean out the filter impeller chamber.

I would change the filter floss every time u do a water change as its cheap and is really only there for mechanical filtration (take large particals out of the water) but if not changed on a regular basis can knock your water chemistry out.

I agree with that.... It's part of the "mechanical" end of the filtration..
