Hi all,

I'm putting together a lighting fixture for my 42 Gal hex.. its a 2x36 Watt... I'm looking at the bulb selections, and i don't understand which kelvin rating i want.. can someone define for me??

Most people say that for planted tanks you should try to get bulbs in the 5300-6700K range but I have heard a lot of very respectable people say the Kelvin rating does not really matter. This is what Roger Miller said about K ratings.

“K is a relatively useless number. It tells you whether the tube's output spectrum is weighted to the reddish or the bluish wavelengths. That doesn't always translate into the light looking reddish or bluish. It doesn't tell you that the light can grow plants well and it doesn't tell you whether the light will produce colors that are balanced and natural.” HTH
