Got this fish today labeled a krib. It looks nothing like the kribs I currently own. It has red on the face instead of yellow, is more elongated in the body and darker. Could it just be a color variant? Or possibly p. taeniatus or another pelvicachromis species?

i've had many different looking kribs, the darker ones like yours in my experience have been more aggressive. He looks starved hopefully he can fatten up and color up for you. gl

Looks like P. pulcher to me, although I know what you mean about the red around the face seeming like P. taeniatus - perhaps a hybrid?
Keep a close eye on the poop, this fish (a female, I believe) looks either starved or riddled with intestinal parasites.

Hey thanks for all the replies. Yeah it's definately a female, she's starting to fatten up a little now that she's getting regular food. She was in a tank at the LFS with several different species of rainbowfish, all of which were WAY faster than her. I imagine she had a hard time getting fed there. I went back two days later and picked up the other male they had in there. They are both doing pretty well. When I put him in the tank she turned almost crimson red from face to anal fins. She looked awesome. I hope she keeps the color as she grows. I haven't seen a bit of yellow on her yet.

Ummm you may want to work on your spelling and grammar. You make it hard for people to make out what your saying when you write like this. It may be easy for some people to read but in other parts of the US or World they will have no clue what your saying. Your statement can't help people if they don't know what your saying. So write more correctly next time please.
Oh and I have no idea what kind of fish that is well the species but I do got to say it does look nice. Nice find and nice save.

Ok if anyone is still following this thread, here is an updated pic, now I thought before this was a female, now I am not so sure. The dorsal fin is not like the male p. pulcher, it's more like the female pulcher or the standard taeniatus, that is why I am still a little confused on this one. Hybrid perhaps? Or maybe a contaminant with a batch of pulchers in the wild? Dunno. Here's the newest shot. Sorry if it's a little grainy. As you can see a 5 weeks later this fish is looking MUCH healthier. It eats like a horse. :)

Ok definitely a male. He was challenging my three p. taeniatus males today. I moved him into another tank with another male krib his size. They both colored up ridiculously bright and chased each other around, then both gave up and skulked around the tank.
