guys at the LFS say not to do any gravel veccuming for at least 6 months after first setting up a tank. is this right? they say continue to do water changes but just no vaccuming? the tank is completely cycled I don't understand their logic. can anyone lend some insight.

There's no reason not to vaccum the tank, You won't disturn the bacteria (they are fairly well attached to everything), and you can keep the nitrates in control.

In addition to learning it's OK to vac your gravel, the extra lesson is that you should be HIGHLY skeptical of ANYTHING this particular LFS employee ever tells you. (The cynical among us would suggest skepticism is a healthy attitude for all moments you spend in an LFS, but far be it from moi to cast aspersions on all LFS employees! There may be 1 or 2 percent of LFS employees who DO know of what they speak, and I'd hate to dump on them!)

Jim,
Funny you should put it that way, I sometimes have trouble not laughing when I hear some of the advice given at the LFS. My rule is this, listen to everything, anylize the info, and get mutiple opinions, Skepticism is not a crime as long as you aren't rude. But just because someone works at a LFS doesn't mean they know of what they speak. Also remember that opinions of a successfull experienced hobbyist are far more valuable than those of a trained employee. Good luck, and keep the gravel clean, the buildup will be immense if you wait six months.

I consider that really reckless advice. The amount of decaying fish food, fish waste, etc. that could build up in 6 months could really pollute the water and lead to high ammonia and nitrites. I always recomend vacuuming the substrate once a week from the beginning.

Best of luck.
