I have a 125 reef about 2 1/2 years old. everything is doing great. I had started to notice white roots a few months ago. The are white, soft, round and look like roots of a plant. they now seem to be spreading all over on the back side of the tank under and around the live rock. i would show a picture but i am not sure how to do it so i am not going to try. Does anybody know of a easy way to get built up coraline algae (besides scraping) off the sides of a glass tank?

could the root things you are seeing be hydroids? are they somewhat translusent and do small pieces of food/debris stick to them after you feed or clean.

best way i know of controlling coraline on glass is with a razor blade and to just not let it build up. but its a good sign your tank is healthy and your calcium is good...wish I had that problem.

If you have a picture, you can email it to me at gregvt@pacbell.net and I'll post it here for you so everyone can see what you've got.

it looks like a type of sponge to me. I wouldn't worry about it unless it starts to take over your tank.

there is quite a bit of this on the back side of the tank. pieces are starting to break off. and ideas??

to help me make sure I am correct in thinking it is a sponge could you give me a size reference on the photo you sent?

Also what is the nature of the "beast" -
is it gelatonous or spongey?
rigid or just firm enough to hold its shape or flexible like a mushroom polyp?
does it fall apart easily if you touch it?
are there holes at the tips of the "fingers"?

Any other details may be helpful too.
