I just got my new emperor 400 filter today and had a question about it... Is it ok to not run that thing wide open?? When i do the water pours out so fast it starts to come out so hard it starts to pool on the top of my lid... I turned it one notch down and it works fine... Also the bio wheels on my 400 are turning like a frigging rocket (no matter how i aim the water)... is that normal.. the one on my old emperor 280 went nice and slow...

One thing that sucks is that the 400 would not fit in my 37 gallon so i had to cut our the center piece that ran from front to back to make it fit.. i hope that wasn't to big a support piece for the tank.. it feels solid to me...

Oh 1 more question... How do you guys clean your gravel?? I was vaccuming mine tonight and it is pretty dirty... do you guys ever take yours out and clean it or just vaccum it???? SOrry i am new to the fish thing

When you say it pools on the top of your lid, are you talking about the hood on the tank? If that's the case then if you have a glass hood with a plastic splash guard (which it doesn't sound like you do or you probably would have thought to do this) you can cut away some of that plastic material with scissors/utility knife/razor knife.

The biowheels will slow down as gunk builds up on the bearings and the shafts of the biowheels, but you might want to make sure you have the spraybars in right, theres a little tab thing on the spraybar that fits in a slot in the filter housing, and when you put them in wrong its not always obvious. If you have them in correctly then try adjusting the spraybars a little more patiently and if it won't slow down dont worry about it.

I don't think the center brace is necessary for structural strength, if it doesn't affect your hood then I wouldn't worry about it, though that is kind of a drag that you had to hack it up.

Someone else can tell you better how to vacuum your gravel

This is a little hard to explain but i will... When i put the top cover on the emperor 400 on the right side if i turn the water all the way up the lid goes down to far and starts impeading the water.. well when that happens the water starts moving father outside under the cover till it reaches the edge and then it starts like squirting out and come out on the top of my lid... THat is the best i can describe it.. lol probably not much help... The cover is on right, there just seems to be a ton of water being pumped... will it be pumping enough on the second setting???

Oh btw the glass comes right up to the filter...so i cannot cut any away

Is the lid to the emperor straight? I have one and when I got it(I left it this way because its not causing any problems) it was bowed so that it doesn't sit completely on the housing but kind of rocks and sits on the intake tube. You can seperate the pieces of the lid from each other, I think it even says how to do it in the manual, or the diagram makes it clear, I remember looking at it. You might be able to gently bend the lower part of the lid.

Is the spray just reaching your hood? If its not spraying very far onto it you can take the glass to a glass shop and have them cut a little off for a few dollars.

Then again if the filter and media is brand new the output will probably slow down soon and you can turn the flow all the way up and not have this problem. On your 37 full flow minus one notch is probably fine, but you paid for a 400, you want to let it operate at full strength, plus if you use the flow restrictor full time I think it will start to make annoying rattling sounds.
