After a LONG week of waiting for my XP3 i finally received it this morning and set it up. My first impression of it when i opened the box was "wow, this looks really easy!!" Mind you this is my first canister. So i flipped through the instructions quickly and started to work. I loaded up the canister with the 4 sponges, some ceramic noodles, and the floss that goes on top. I hooked up all the lines, primed it and turned it on. It really is quite simple to hook up and probably only took me 20 mins total to get it out of the box and up and running. I had to really get down close to it to make sure it was on...its pretty quiet! So i cranked up the flow rate to full tilt and got that annoying whistling sound some people complain about the spray bar so i made the holes slightly bigger and its now silent. So i finished my setup and continued with my day. I come home about 4 hours later and am just totally blown away at how clear my water is. I changed out my substrate previously so my water had been kinda cloudy but now its just incredably clean! I took it apart after it had been running all day just to get an idea of what im in for when it comes time to clean it...super simple!! Just disconect the hoses with the simple flip of a lever, 4 locking levers to remove the top and pull the cages out...couldnt be simpler!! Im sold on canisters from now on...if it continues to deliver the performance ive seen since thins morning i will buy one for every tank i own!! Awesome filter and i HIGHLY recommend it to anyone looking for a good canister.

I second that! A lot of researching went into my decision on my first canister being an XP2. I loved it so much, I added an XP3 to my 100 gal. tank. I have never regretted my decision!
I just put new hoses on my xP3 and it made me realize how much I like it. I have had it for a few months now and the hoses got dirty pretty quickly(well, they weren't my hoses beviking)

I bought an xp3 about a week and a half ago. I hooked it up with no problem except getting those hoses on the intake and outtake took a little effort. I know about the air getting trapped and removing it so that's not a problem. However, I'm noticing an increasing hum(all the time) and a swishing noise every 20 secs or so. I can't figure out what's causing it. The impeller is fine, no obstructions in the way. I have from top to bottom: Microfiber batting/ biozorb pad/ 2 media bags with ammolock and carbon / ceramic rings/ and the 4 sponges that come with it on the bottom cage. there's no airstone or air source to get air from in the tank, so I can't seem to figure it out. I've taken it apart and cleaned a couple of times to make sure that's not it and it's still making the noticeable hum and swishing every 10-20 secs or so. If anyone knows please let me know cause I don't really want to take it back if there's something I can do about it.

I've got a xp3 and love it, but i haven't owned any other so I can't compare very well. I wouldn't hesitatre to buy another.
I purchased an XP2 a month ago for my 65g and I too feel the same way... easy to use with great versatility and an excellent value

:shake: A few months and already you replace the hoses? Dude, you KNOW what that means...quit playing with your hose soooo much! You wore them out!!! And if they weren't your hoses...well I'm not sure I want to converse with you...even over the screen!
:laugh: satch, after the swish noise, do bubbles come out of the spraybar? If so, you may have a small air leak. This may also be the cause of the humming. Check the hose connection at both ends. You're sure the inlet and outlet are together fully? DON'T push too hard on the spray bar and inlet tube though, I've cracked a couple pcs trying to make sure they were tight.

I just bought the XP2 at Smith and Foster(on sale this month $68, just checked on back order but the XP is on sale as welll for $87) received in 3 days and another vote for this great filter!
Ok, I just set up my XP3 on my tank and it was pretty easy to do. The only question I have is how can you tell what sort of syphoning power the intake valve has? I put my hand down by it but can't really seem to tell if it is suctioning correctly. Does that make sense? The output is working fine so I'm assuming that everything else is working fine but was just curious. I am completely new to canisters having used the AQ 500 and AQ 300's on this tank. I'm anxious to see what kind of job it does on my 55 gal with my AQ 500 running with it. The REAL test will be how it does on my new 110gal that will be set up in the next 2 weeks!
