and they are fine! i dropped that ph shock 8.2, waited a day, ph didnt really move at all from 7.2, so i was like well ok i guess that stuff doesnt work very well, so i threw in a bunch of tankingyakan and now a week later or so, i test water... 9!!!!! **** they are tuff fish
 
The pH in Lake Tanganyika varies from 8.5 up to 9.2.
So pH 9 would be great for those cichlids.
But how come the pH went from 7 all the way up to 9? that's a 100 times more alkaline.

Some cichlids can and will tolerate a certain level of pH instability.
But if it was me, I wouldn’t have the pH jumping up and down too much over a short period of time.
