I just got a 10 gal for use as a hospital tank. Does it need any substrate, and what besides a heater and a powerhead should I put in there? It seems silly to attempt any sort of biological filter, with the medication use in there, but without it, how do I keep water levels in check?

Substrate will just be trouble. A people often use pieces of PVC pipe as hiding places for the inmates.

For biological filtration, what a lot of people do is keep a sponge filter in the main tank, to keep it innoculated with bacteria, then put it in the hospital tank when somebody goes in.

Excellent, how long should new fish be kept there before being introduced to the main tanks? I realize ich and other diseases can take a while to show up. Also, what kind of water changes should I do in there to try to keep the water levels in check? Are products like amquell going to help me keep everything under control? Thanks so much guys, you are always so helpful to us uninformed newbies...

True quarantine will be at least 3-4 weeks--longer is better. Water changes every other day will help keep things in check--test the water to make sure it's adequate. Just making sure--but I wouldn't medicate unless you know there's something to medicate for. Adding meds 'just in case' is a bad idea.
