I woke up this morning to see one of my Scarlett Legged hermit crabs sporting a new shell...one from a Cerith snail (which is smaller- go figure). The Cerith's body is nowhere to be seen. Whenever I am at the LFS I keep an eye open of shells, but havn't had any luck. I have found a few web sites that have them for sale, but all I have found is huge quanities for a minimum order. Anybody know of another source for empty shells?

You can get a 12 pack of empty shells through Live Aquaria for almost nothing. But as you said, you need a minimum order before you can make a purchase. Unless they consider that other than living goods. Ill have to check.

Thanks for the links, I'll be ordering something from both of them soon.

Local Help

There's no way you shouldn't be able to get a local hobbyiest to fork over a few "spent" shells from their tank. ;) Those hermits are quite "adoptive" to many shells, provided they're not insanely huge to lug around. Put out a shout to your fellow locales, or perhaps even some local stores. They should actually be happy to get some "dead snail shells" out of their tanks, if you pitch it to 'em that way! ;)

That would be nice, however, I have never had any luck with that here in Chicago. I avoid the chains like Petco and PetSmart like the plague, but none of the high end LFS around here won't cut any slack. I have spent thousands of dollars over the past few years in many of these places, and I can't even get a $2.00 store credit when I bring in babies. It's nice to go into a LFS and see exactly what you are getting, but the attitude is a real turn off. I'm yet to buy any fish supplies or livestock via the Internet, but it's becoming more enticing every day.
