Any suggestions on what to feed Plecos. I just got a stary night pleco (L-183) which is a form of Bristlenose that doesn't get very big. Right now he is 2 in at the most. My tank doesn't have a huge amount of algea and I was wondering, other than boughten algea wafers, what you can feed these guys that I might have at home anyways. I've heard of things like cucumbers (sp) and other things like that. Any type of suggestions is welcome.

Cucumbers, zuccini, lettuce.... you can try almost any veggie and see what he likes.

Thanks, I just thought it would be cheaper to take things I already have instead of buying algea wafers all of the time....

I still would like more suggestions if anyone has them, and possibly different methods of feeding, like securing the food and where to place the food, things like that. And I'm assuming the best time is right before lights out???

I've secured zuccini with a rubber band to driftwood and other decoration at the bottom of the tank. I suggest removing the middle part with the seeds because they tend to make a mess.

I feed my bristlenose plecos zuchini, cucumber, carrots, and yams. I freeze the carrots and yams to make them soft but found that the plecos can eat the zuchini and cucumber ram as its not too hard.

For feeding i use a fork attached to a fishingline. I poke the food onto the fork them lower in intot he tank, leaving some line sticking out the top. When they are done eating i just pull out the fork. That way i dont' have to get wet :)

I normally throw a slice or two of zucunni/cucumber in after the lights go out so that my pleco can get some...otherwise my mbuna just eat it all within mins.

I jsut put in the veggies when ever. IN my community tanks the fish dont' really care for it so the plecos are left alone to eat it(they come out to eat during the day). And in my african tank I jsut put a big enough piece taht the africans can eat all they want and when they are done the plecos can have some.
