Hi,

A friend is giving me a 42 gallon hexagon tank. It currently has 2 goldfish.

I believe it doesn't have a good water filter. I want to replace it when I get the tank.

For a tank this size and that is tall, any recommendations on what water filteration system to use? I want something good, and if not outrageously expensive..I am open to about anything.

Also, for a goldfish tank this size...any other recommendations on what I should add to the tank?

THANKS!!

For fish that are large waste producers like goldfish, I would probably go with a reverse flow UGF (so the waste doesn't clog the gravel) and then a large HOB for mechanical filtration. I would go with an AquaClear 500, since they are easy to maintain and can be loaded with a variety of medias. For this tank, a pair of sponges would be great, since you could pull them out and rinse the solid wastes away easily.

For other fish--you'll be limited. Goldies prefer cooler water than many fish easily found. Weather loaches would be one option--they will thrive in water down to the upper-60's, and will need a well covered tank. Most other fish are true tropicals, and won't do well in the cooler water, while the goldies won't do well in warmer water.
