Nicaragua Cichlid.

How large do they have to be before i will start to see them pair off? I havea group of 6 juvis. Are their any visual signs i will see as which is male and which is female besides size and color at only 1" ? they are all close in size and color quality at the moment. Only one is noticebly larger then the rest so far.

I think they spawn early at around 5-6 in. I'm not so sure though because i've never kept nicaragua cichlids before.

Hi Akido.......Mine paired off at about 4". You can see eggs in the first pic below (they had only been together a few weeks). It was their first spawn and no eggs hatched. Nics are some of the most colorful, delighful fish. And they have great temperaments. However, 1" is pretty small to sex them reliably.

Four inches is about right. I think you had two males and the rest females. The male will have a pattern in the dorsal fin.

BTW...Mine bred again. There's more here if you want. I got your e-mail. WIll respond shortly. Doing holiday due dilligence right now.

Gregga. No problem. I will work that out. Right now they are just wigglers. When they get to a size that makes sense I will let you know.

I have three Nics, all female, so there won't be any breeding. I like female because they are prettier. Nic are extremely hardy fish because I placed one Nic in a hospital tank with sick fish as a compainion to help eat the left over food. She had gone through three weeks of strong medication including Paragon II, Clout and Tetracycline. The sick fish did not make it and died from bloat and bacterial infection, but the Nic made it through unharmed by the medication and did not catch the desease. She had only lost appetite for a few days but now she is eating well and coloring up brightly.
