A friend of mine has a SERIOUS problem...she has a female betta...which seems to have been carrying eggs for quite some time now. We've had several people look at her, and they all agree. However...she's been like this for almost 2 months now, and the fish is quite obviously MISERABLE. Unfortunately, we can't seem to find a male that will get along with her. Is there anything else that can be done rather than trying to find a male. We have tried almost 20 other male bettas, and none of them will have anything to do with her...they all just beat her up, no spawning whatsoever. Does anyone have a remedy? She won't just drop the eggs...we're lost as to a remedy to this problem. Any help is greatly appreciated.

Spawning bettas is not simply as easy as throwing two opposite sexes together. The male needs to be introduced to the female, female removed. Then the male needs to build a bubble nest, after which the female can be reintroduced, but if he beats on her and she runs away, she needs to be removed, if she lowers her head and doesn't run away, she is ready to spawn. Female bettas will drop their eggs without a male however, so personally I don't think this is the problem. It more sounds like to me that she may be bloated. Try adding some epsom salt to the tank, about one table spoon per 10gal, and also feed her food laced with garlic, or simply buy some garlic food.

It does sound like she is bloated. Often times if you can get them to eat a cooked frozen pea that helps.
