Hi! New member...love all the helpful hints and info!
I just replaced my Fluval 303 with a Fluval 404 and decided to add an AC 300 for extra filtration on my 55 gal tank. Only problem is the hanging lip/ledge of the AC is too narrow for my tank lip. I'm reluctant to cut off part of the lip; afraid to mess with the tank's integrity (and strength). Anyone else have this problem and solution?
Also have an UGF system that I'd like to remove (can't stand those tubes) but having read thru your threads I know that's a whole controversy in itself!
Thanks for any ideas.

Do you have a regular 55 gallon? Who made it? I've seen AC 300 not fit on 65 gallons but never on a 55

Yes, it is unusual. Most 55 gallons are 4ft long and not as high hence thiner glass. Im afraid there isnt much you can do short of altering something and I'd be unwilling to do that. I know that the AC 500 will fit. Sorry I couldnt be more help.

Oh,well...thanks for your replies. Do you think an AC 500 along with the Fluval 404 would be too much for this tank? Of course I also have room constraint; only about 5 inches between the tank and wall and of course there's no question of moving it!
BTW, it's been a long time since I've been referred to as a "junior" anything. Did I make a mistake when I registered? I had all my kids before 1991! I've gone into "edit profile" but can't seem to change that. Or am I a jr member because I just joined?

LOL on the junior! Its just part of the default software when you have low number of posts. I believe you can change it in the options.

A fluval 404 would probably be enough. There are other HOB filters with lower outputs that might fit on the tank. I'm only experienced with AC filters though.

Yep, I have that problem too.

I didn't want to try and cut away the plastic since it would just crack.

So what I did is use an old sodering (sp?) iron to *melt* away the parts of the plastic that were causing it not to fit. This way you don't introduce cracks.

If you look at the filter (and how often do you look at the front of the filter when it's on the back of the tank) you can tell I did something to it. but it works fine for almost 2 years now. No leaks. Actually I don't ever expect any leaks--the area you melt away is far from any water.

Thanks..and buy on-line!

Thanks, Goldfish. Maybe I'll work on something like that rather than jump up to an AC 500...too much power for what I need and 2X the electricity of the 300!
Of course I might end up being stuck w/an unuseable 300 but I bought it online so you know I got a deal on it! I would never buy anything off-line. The price difference is amazing! When I went looking around for the AC 300, the store by me that has fairly decent prices was asking $65; PETCO on-line had it for $22 on sale. That's some difference! S&H doesn't even matter at that price.

On the junior title...after you gain some posts and time here, you will have the option to change that later on in your profile. For now, your stuck with it the way it is. It doesnt imply your a newb to fishkeeping or that your "young", it's just showing people your new to AC...no biggie. :D
