View Full Version : Benifits of Heating Cables, underwater jets?

I've been a freshwater tank owner for a while now but am wanting to take the plunge into saltwater.

I'll planning on setting the tank up in about 6 months - 1year as I've just moved cities and still working things out. This gives me lots of time to research and plan things ;)

All I want is a tank with clown fish and anenomes(sp?) so hopefully I won't need to much gear.

Now I just want to know whether it would be better to just incorporate heaters into a sump or whether it was worht the trouble of going with under substrate heating cables.

Also for some turbulence would having again under substrate jets be a good idea or just some powerheads? I like the look of no equipment in the tank and I'm pretty sure I could do the jets with not much trouble.

But I don't know if its a good idea, thoughts??

The only reason I've ever heard to justify under-substrate heating is to prevent "cold feet" in planted tanks. If you have a situation where the tank temperature is wildly different from room temperature, you might want to take care of your detrivores with a sub-substrate heater, but that seems an extreme case.

Ok well I decided against both ideas, really wouldn't be worth my time and effort.

Thanks for the info :)
