is 40 watts good enufe for a 75 gallon tank. no real plants

If you're not trying to keep plants alive, lights arn't even a real necassary. They just help you see the fish ;) . Granted fish like light too.

For general viewing you should be perfectly fine...i used 30 watts total on my 55 when it wasnt planted and it was just fine for fish only.
