Expired date on live sand

Yesterday I purchased 20 lbs of live sand and after placing it in my tank I observed that the expiration date was two months ago. Is this important? I took the package back to the LFS and got a "tap dance" from the kid who sold it to me. He ended by saying that "this stuff lasts forever."

Does it? Normally, I would have been a little more assertive but my wife was with me and I have to play nice with her around. Also, I usually deal with a weekday guy who is aware of how much business I do with this store.

Is it worth making a fuss over?

Thanks.

In my opinion, the bagged stuff at the LFS is junk from the start. It's hard to imagine the bacteria you want, which have a relatively high oxygen demand, surviving well in a bag for even a week. Getting some stuff from a fellow reefer's bed, or ordering from TBS or Gulf View online is much better.

The matter was resolved today.

I went back to the LFS and talked to an employee that I usually do business with. I told him what happened and showed him the bag with the expired date. Before he had to reply or give an opinion I said that I felt that I had been treated badly and felt that the best way to resolve the situation was for him to give me store credit for the $30 I spent on the live sand. In turn, I would purchase an additional $30 along with the store credit on live rock. He agreed and I'm happy with the way it turned out.
