I have a 75 gal. tank with a cracked center brace. I have some ideas but looking for more. I am a bit of a carpenter. I want to build a canopy and stand of real wood, (not sure wich wood yet). My idea is to build the canopy as a structurial piece with bracing in the center (srewed) out of 3/8" +/- acrilic to help pull the center in. The brace will be twice as wide as the original brace. My question is this a good idea to do that this way? Any ideas are appericiated.

My best advise is to be really sure you know what you are doing. Roughly speaking a 75 gallon tank should weigh in the range of 825 pounds when filled and stocked. I really don't know how strong the center brace of an aquarium that size is, but I can just see screws popping out when that much weight is pressed up against them.

if you can get it tight enought it would work, its basically doing the same thing as the center brace but wood does give a lot more so it might still bow. another member just had a piece of steel cut with the edges bent down and used that as a brace. then you can build a canopy over that. pretty cheap and isnt much more work.
