how do you place the heater in your tank? do you place it vertically or horizontally? i was thinking about placing my heater diagonally under the filter intake. would that be a good idea?

If its water-proof a horizontal or diagnal mounting would probably be best. Mounting one horizontal and low in the tank makes it easy to hide, but you should take care that it doesn't contact anything in the tank directly.
Assuming its submersible, the best place is horizontally about 2 inches from the substrate near a filter intake.
