Hi all,

When my tank(s) settle down from my ich/velvet/bacterial war, I was hoping to get a ram... I read that their ph has to be very low, is this true? I keep my tank around 7.3, will this be too high? Thanks!

My brother has a pair of rams (used to have 2 pair) who spawn periodically in a pH of 7.8. I have a female ram in my 38 which is quite happy in a pH of 7.4.

The pH really depends on where the fish were raised. Asian fish are raised in extremely soft, acidic water which can make them hard to keep. European rams are far more adaptable; the ones we have were raised in medium hard (like 5-8 gH) and a ph of around 7.6.

Yep, so long as you let them get used to the water slowly rams should be fine in water that isn't in their perfect ph range. As Pumaward mentioned, rams like most fish are bred in different places and some of those places don't have 'ideal' water specifications.

Thanks all!!!

I picked up the bolivian ram this afternoon... WOW!!! I never knew what the big deal about rams was until i saw him in the store, and he looks even better in the tank!!
