They are big messy fish that eat everything they can get in their mouth
They are also IMO the most awesome fish you can put in a tank. There is a huge amount of information all over the net, at the library, and in the book department at the pet store. The basics are this. They grow to somewhere around 12 " (give or take 2") they create a huge amont of waste, they are nearly impossible to sex, and difficult to pair up for breeding. They are very smart (relative term ) fish, that are fun to watch, they will learn to recognise their owners, they can be taught tricks and will play games with you. If you manage to get a pair, they are good parents. They are commonly considered aggressive (I disagree). Given a decent size tank and good water they will usually get along with most fish that are too big to eat. They are curious and playfull so anything that isn't glued down, or too heavy may get moved around, broken, or torn up. There are several varieties, Common Oscar, red tiger, black Tiger, albino, etc. There are also long finned versions of most of these. IMHO 2 oscars need 90 gallons or more, people keep them in 55's but I would never do it.
Baby Oscars are really cool and available everywhere but remember thy grow about 1" per month so even though they are small when you get them they will outgrow a small tank quickly.
I don't find them to be very aggressive as they will be territorial with other fish. Then they can become aggressive.
But, they are awesome fish. Quite a personality.
