I have 2 problems, 4 dead goldfish in 2 days, cloudy water that is still there after water changes. I just got the tank and fish from walmart tuesday. It has a filter but doesn't seem to be doing much. Also I do not currently have my air pump working, will be tonight. What can I do to clear the tank, and what can I do to help my little buddies stop dying?

What size is the tank and what kind of filtration are you using? Also, how many fish are still in there?

In general, new tanks need to be very lightly populated until they have cycled, which will take over a month unless you can obtain some already mature filter media and use that. In the meantime, daily water changes will help.

Its a 5 gallon tank, I have 13 very small gold fish and 3 algae eaters. The filter is one with the filter and Bio-Wheel. I forget whats its called, not home right now to look.

13 goldfish was way, way too many for a tank that small. A 5 gallon tank won't be large enough for even one adult goldfish, sorry. There are many fish that will work in a small tank, but goldfish are not on the list, nor are most fish sold as algae eaters.

I would take all the fish back, if you can, and start researching the nitrogen cycle. There are many threads in the Freshwater Archive here that cover cycling, and will help you get the tank viable for supporting fish--and we can help pick out some fish that will live in your tank.

And I thought I was over stocking!

Have you even let the tank cycle yet (which takes a few weeks)!?

That is what I call cruel!!

yea i had 14 goldfish in a 29 gallon but now theres only 2:sad it was because the tank hadn't cycled long enough. have u ever seen a full grown goldfish they get HUGH a 29 gallon should only hold 3. i deffinitly think that u need other fish and/or a bigger tank

I am now down to 4 goldfish. Gave some away, some died. If the rest die off I am probalby going to get one nice fish. On the up side the Algea Eaters are doing great.
