Hi all, I am going to add a HOB to my 90gal FW tank. AC's are out of the question as they don't fit over the lip of the tank. So I am looking at the emperor's. I have an Xp3 and I will be doing cichlids . Would the 280 be enough or would the 400 be overkill.
Thanks again Phil

Its the Filstar XP3. I am thinking the 400 would be it as well. I was concerned about the flow in the tank but since ( I think) the output can be turned down a bit thats not a big deal. Now I wait for the sale.

Just to say it, I'm not sure an emporer will fit over your tank lip any better than a AC. I have a 50g tank that has a wide lip and I have yet to find a HOB type filter that sits all the way down on it.

I have a 115 and had to trim the lip for both my AC 500 and my Emporer 400, I don't think the Emporer is any wider than the AC, I have an old emporer (9 years old) so maybe they have improved them but I would check before I bought. My obsevation is that AC and Emporer neither one build their filters to fit well on the tanks they build them for. This is an irritation that I am not sure how to deal with. So I usaully trim my tank rims to fit when possible.

If it fits, I would recommend the emporer 400.

Thanks, I am going to try the 400 and we'll see how it goes. I would rather not trim the tank rim but I like this filter. so...I'll keep this post updated.

Well my order arrived today and 1/2 hour later the emperor 400 was working nicely. Its a bit of a tight fit over the lip of the tank but a little wack on the top of the filter and it nicely in place. Its a lot bigger than I thought and a tad noisy with the bio wheels but I know I can tame that down a bit. I had to remove the little bit of plastic on the edge of the folding glass top but I can cut it to fit around the filter.
Cichlids come next...yippee...
What does everyone elso use for filter media instead of the filter pads it comes with. Seems like a ton of room for floss bats or sponges or the like...
