Hi there everyone I Am Starting Up A Reef Tank. I Have been keeping fissh only tanks for about two years and am intersted in a reef system. I have a 50 gallon tank 36/16/20 with three 10,000k lights on it. I am just wondering what corals would be good to start off with. I am hoping to make it very colorfull as well as estetically pleasing. Aswell what fish can i have in a reef tank if any and inverts as well crabs snails etc.... Also i have a protein protein skimmer is that essential for a reef system. Thanks Very Much

The output of the lights will dictate the corals you can keep. Are they normal output fluorescent, power compact, very high output? If they are NO, then you will probably be limited to very low light corals such as mushrooms (corallimorpharians). You can get them in lots of colors, though. With more light, there are lots of soft corals to choose from. Leathers, like sinularia, are quite hardy and come in some intense colors. Stoloniferans, like green star polyps, are also durable and can be intensely green.

I am a big fan of skimmers on reef tanks. Most of the people I know here use them, and I have seen no adverse effect on my tank from skimming. Others argue that they remove plankton and trace elements.

If you can get a fixture with at least 200 watts of compact fuorescent lighting (like 2X96 watt power compact) it will be a good start. More is always better.
