I have a very pregnant guppy. I believe she will have hre fry this week. My worry is if I should move her to my five gallon fry tank that is currently empty or put her in a birth tank in the current aquatium and just move the fry? I lost a female and all fry (about 30) on Friday in the birth tank before I had the five gallon ready(all were "gone" whe I got home from work).

Please help, I want them to survive.

You mean they died? I don't know if you keep any other fish in the 10g. I have a 20g that is planted and I keep there 1 oto cat and one cory cat. I have two female guppies there and one male. I had eight fry close to two weeks ago and all are alive and growing fast. Added two small clown loaches last week to control the snail population. It looks that the other female is ready to give birth. In my case, I don't move any fish around. Planted tank helps and it doesn't look that the parents ate any of the fry. When I added the loaches, they were chasing the fry for a day or so, thinking it's food.:)

I think the key is planted tank, so the fry have places to hide. I'm not doing anything special and the fry are growing really fast.

All of the fry and the mother died. At the time all I had were guppies in there. Now I have 1 cory cat. I have also lost two males to tail rot since. I am treating with Maracyn II right now.

I so worried that something will happen to my fry. My tank is semi planted with plastic plants and I have some large "rocks" piled in the corner for hiding places. I'm still not sure if I should move the mommy before she has them. My five gallon is well planted and it is not being medicated.

From what I can understand, you lost you fish to decease. Moving them won't help. How long have you been running this tank and how often do you change your water? I would think that your water parameters aren't ideal and that's why you're having your problems. How much are you feeding them? I feed mine, twice a day and it's very little and they consume most of the food at the top, before it falls down. I crush my flakes so they're smaller. I feed flakes in the morning and dried brine shrimp in the evening(I crush the shrimp too). The shrimp is really good for the fry as it's very small and the fry can eat it almost imediatelly. They always appear to be hungry. Once a week or every two weeks, they will get a taste of frozen blood worms and brine shrimp.

Spunke, give more details as to why your fish and fry died before. How are your fish doing now, after treating with medicine. If they're better, you can do 50% water changes every other day to remove medicine. If the fry came now, they would most likely die from the medicine in the tank. It would be better to move the mother, provided the other tank is established/cycled.

Tank perams are:
Ammonia 0
Nitrite <0.3 (lowest my test goes)
No nitrate test
pH 8.0
Temp between 76 to 78 degrees F
In third day of treatment. Did tests today, water looks really clowdy.
I do 30% water changes once a week.
First mother and fry were in a birthing tank in the 10 gallon before
I got he tail rot. Fry came on Firday and Tail Rot on Saturday

Forgot, fish look really good today except fot the clowdy water and I feed them twice a day special guppy food that are extra small flakes and tube flex worms in a small amount.

Ammonia and nitrite are very low so it shouldn't be a problem. Cloudy water, this is a bit puzzling. If I didn't see your tests, I would say that ammonia/nitrite were high. Could be that your nitrate is high. Not sure if it would cloud the water. Did you replace any of your filter sponges or anything like that lately. Without knowing, I would say that you replaced all your sponges to new ones and your tank is going through cycling again.

Looks like you're doing ok on water changes. Myabe I would step up the water changes. Keep in mind that it would wash out your meds so either you would have to re-apply or stop alltogether. Never treated my fish for tail rot so not sure

Let me know.

Haven't changed the filters. Not sure what to do about the water. All tests read normal and fish are acting fine. No signs of tail rot either (knock on wood):) Just don't want to loose more fry. My mommy lookes like she is getting close and I still have two days on the treatment and the watre is really worring me.

hhmm that sounds almost as odd as mine. Was the first female a new guppy you got or is it one you've had? It could possibly be that the female was sick already before you got it, if it is new, and the fry went with along with the sickness.

For mine, I bought a pair of guppies. The mother was already prego, before I bought them. A day after the birth the mother died, and a day after that the male died. Odd thing is all (well 17/22) the fry made it and are growing great.

How are you fish doing in the tank now? You stated that after that death you also had two males die. You may have to clean out the tank very well before you put in other fish.

As far as moving both the mother and the fry or just the fry, I don't think it would matter too much as long as the tank has been well cycled and the water is clean. I do know however that giving birth can be very stressful to the mother so if you move her it may give her added stress and cause death. If you decide to move her try to move her as soon as possible and keep her in the tank she gave birth in for at least 3-5 days so she can recuperate. It's been my exp. that they won't eat their fry, at least I've never seen it done.

When my guppies give birth I don't change the water for at least a week because I fear that the potential ph, amonia, etc. change will kill them. It is very well filtered tho. I don't know maybe I'm just gettin lucky but I've not seen much of a lost to any of my fry, and now have another batch coming in (6 new fry a few days ago and 10 today).
