I've been using the same filters for a couple of months now in some of my tanks.

These are the common carbon-sponge type that come with Regent HOBs.

About twice a month I swish them around in a bucket of water and try to rub any clingy stuff off of them.

Is this ok, or do I need to plan on changing them soon?

Don't change your sponges. Clean them out in dechlorinated water and you'll be fine.

They can be cleaned until there's not enough of the floss-lke stuff to filter out crud. When you do change them, you might want to swap them out a couple of weeks apart so you don't pitch all your beneficial bacteria.

dont change the sponges just clean them. if you shove a bunch of bioballs or biobales into the filter it would work even better, thats what i did for the 30-60 filter into my 40 gallon.

Once the padding does where down you can just use some filterfloss, from my experiance it filters better then the original pads

I chucked the carbon and just use sponges and filter floss. And I just rinse then every week. Be doin it for a year with no problems.
