Just bought an 800 watt metal halide light for my 90 gallon tank.

I have an anemone and some colt coral. My question is: is there

such a thing as too much light having negative effects on coral

and fish?

You'll want to acclimate the animals to the higher lights. Best option--start out by having it come on for just a few hours a day, after the other lights have been on for a few hours. gradually increase the photo period over the course of a couple weeks. Monitor the animals, and if they are showing signs of 'burn', move them to lower areas in the tank. Be prepared for the anenome to move around, initially, while it gets used to the light and finds a location it likes.

Thanks, for the advice. I will set my timers for a short duration initially. Just one more thing. Do I still need an actinic light as a part of my setup?

Yes. The MH don't offer much in the way of the blue spectrum, so I would still run the actinics. They make a good light for simulating dawn and dusk, as well.

Nice! I was worried maybe I had gone too far with 800 watts.
