Does anybody have experience with Sera Morena "blackwater conditioner" or similar products from Kent and Tetra? I have read that it is a nice way to get that blackwater stream look/feel, but I'd like to know more about it before I start dumping it in the tank! I'm looking at the water conditioner route because a couple people have told me that peat filtering will wreak havoc with the pH in my relatively soft water.

(This would be for a new 30-gallon planted tank I'm setting up, rather than the 10g in my specs.)

I don't recognize the brand that you describe, but I used some kind of blackwater extract in the distant past (when I thought I was going to do Discus "right" )

It did impart a very nice amber color to the water, and the fish looked cool and acted just as happy as usual.

Potential problems:
  • It will reduce light penetration. You will have to determine the importance of that factor in your planted tank.
  • Activated carbon will pull it out overnight, if not sooner. If you routinely use activated carbon, you'll go through a lot of blackwater supplement.
