How many african Cichlids in a 55g

Without knowing specific species you're considering, it's impossible to say. If you went with a single-species tank of a fairly docile fish, say Labidochromis caeruleus (usually called yellow labs or electric yellows), you could go with 7 or 8. More aggressive or territorial fish, e.g., Pseudeotropheus lombardoi (aka 'kennyi') wouldn't be appropriate at all.

Have you any likely suspects for the tank?

Take a look at some species profiles at www. cichlid-forum.com or otehr african cichlid web pages. You should be able to fidn waht species you yellow, blue and orange fish are.

The yellow ones might be yellow labs(Labidochromis cearuleus(sp?) as they are the most common yellow fish.

The orange ones might be red zebras(not sure hwo to spell the scientific name)

And the blue ones could be many many different species as tehre are lots of common blue species. Is it pure blue or does it have stripes?

I was thinking of 2 yellowHarps and 2 electric blueharps and two other 2 cichlids

I have 14 plus an algae eater. Two yellow tailed violets, three red zebras, three kenyi's, three colbalt blue's and three baby yellow labs, and my pleco. They all get along just fine :) I wouldn't put any more in though.
