This can't be a good thing! I found one dead fish this morning. I'm preparing a 2-1/2 gallon water changeout as we speak. I just got the ammonia test an hour ago. I'm thinking I should be doing 2-1/2 gallon water changeouts daily until my amonia is back to normal. What should I be doing?

Temp is 78F
I don't have testers for the nitrites/nitrates yet.

Oh, and my tank has been cycling for about 10 days now with what used to be 4 tiger barbs.

Do several water changes, as many as are needed to dilute the ammonia below 1. This likely means you'll need to change out about 70% of the water. Doing several small changes, about 30 minutes apart, is often easier than trying to do one large one. Either method works though.

I would change more than 2.5 gallons. I suggest water changes of at least 50 percent daily, even twice a day. I'm sure I don't have to mention it, but just in case, make sure you use a water treatment to remove the chlorine from your tap water. Water changes will help get that ammonia level down. You should buy a nitrite test kit soon as well. It will also begin to spike and you need to monitor those levels too.

I agree with Orion and RHJ. I wouldn't worry about how much water you're chaning, just so that you're changing enough so that ammonia never exceeds 1.0 ppm.
