I'm just starting to get my 50g tank planted for the first time. I currently have 80 watts of light, but I do have future plans to add another 20 to 40 watts in my DIY hood. I currently have a bit of anacharis in the tank that seems to be doing well enough. I also have some crypts on order to arrive next week. The crypts being lutea and wendtii green. After that I was going to add java fern and java moss. Would there be any other suggestions on a lowish light tank?

My low light favourites are dwarf sag, ambulia (limnophila), and vallisneria, especially corkscrew vals.

Crypts and anubias are nice too. You would be surprised the number of different plants you can probably grow in there. In a tank with less than 1 watt per gallon I am growing rotala, ludwigia repens, swords, hygro corymbosa, dwarf sag, ambulia, and others. Don't be afraid to plants because they will probably grow fine, unless they are high to very high light.

Thanks for the answers you two. My current plan is to add another 20 watt light to my tank that will be on a different timer to simulate a more natural lighted period.

Not sure if you really need that. My lights come on instantly full brightness and turn off suddenly and the plants don't seem to mind. Certaintly won't hurt to add more light, just saying you don't necessarily HAVE to.
